Smoke Detectors and Carbon Monoxide (CO) Detectors
Every home should have smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors installed throughout the structure. Abacus licensed electricians help homeowners place these important safety devices strategically. Usually we recommend installing one smoke detector in every bedroom, at the top of every staircase, and in common areas. Carbon monoxide (CO) detectors should be installed near sleeping areas, but not near stoves in case the rising heat sets them off falsely.
If a smoke or CO detector goes off, get everyone outside quickly and call the fire department. Do not go inside until the authorities have given you the all clear.
Smoke and CO detectors should be tested every month. Change the batteries annually to make sure they keep working properly. Replace CO detectors with new ones every five to seven years. Replace smoke detectors every 10 years.
Abacus’s comprehensive electrical inspections include assessing wiring for all smoke and CO detectors in the house.
